Humor

Humor helps us through difficult situations and brings comfort, relief and laughter to those around us. Kids high in this strength may make others laugh easily and are quick to appreciate funny, ironic or amusing situations.

Studies show that humor is one of the strengths most associated with positive emotions and is one of the most desirable strengths in choosing a friend. The children’s books below explore humor through jokes, poetry, funny situations, strong characters, and clever wordplay.

Stephanie wants to do something different with her hair, so she goes to school in a ponytail, a style no one else wears. When the other kids tease her and tell her its ugly, she stands strong and tells them, “It’s my ponytail and I like it.” The next day everyone copies her. The escalating hairstyles, extreme copycat behavior and funny school scenario are so over-the-top and funny.

Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch

A frustrating familiar situation is rendered hilarious and lighthearted in the bright irreverent children’s book. This captures why it’s so hard to be patient and plays with the feeling of being powerless amid the grown-ups. While the recommended age for this one is 3-6, I think older elementary age kids would also find this funny and enjoy the wacky illustrations.
